A payment gateway is an e-commerce application service provider that authorizes payments for e-businesses, online retailers and these days is even used by some real world stores. It is the online equivalent of a physical cash register or POS terminal located in most retail outlets.
The main fuction of the Payment gateway is to process payments, protects credit cards details by encrypting sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and to ensure that information passes securely between the customer and the merchant and also between merchant and payment processor.
